Dr. Ana Miriam Velly is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry at McGill University, associate member of the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Community Studies and the Dental Clinic of the Jewish General Hospital, and a Research Associate at the School of Dentistry, University of Minnesota.

She is an internationally recognized scientist in the field of pain, who served as President of the Neurosciences Group of the International Association of Dental Research between 2007 and 2008, and as Director of the Registry for the National Institute of Health/ NIDCR's TMJ Implant Registry and Repository since 2006. She is Principal Investigator or co-applicant on research grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Weekend to End Women's Cancer Research Fund. She edits reviews for the Journal of Dental Research, Pain, Pain Practice, Pain Research & Management, Sleep Medicine, Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, and Journal of Public Health Dentistry.

A major goal of Dr Velly’s research is to elucidate strategies to prevent and treat acute and chronic pain. This program has been a multidisciplinary effort involving researchers from the Jewish General Hospital and the University of Minnesota. She is also collaborating with researchers in faculties of dentistry in France and the United Kingdom.

Major Research Activities

To assess the relationship between chronic pain and comorbid conditions. To identify the risk and prognostic factors related to acute and chronic pain. To determine the prognostic factors related to unsuccessful pain treatment. To determine the best strategies for the management of acute and chronic pain. And, finally, to identify biomarkers related to pain and comorbid conditions.

She has been the director of the Registry for the National Institute of Health/ NIDCR's TMJ Implant Registry and Repository since 2006.

Her current focus is on comorbid conditions related to chronic pain.
