Bluma Brenner has gained international recognition for her studies identifying and characterizing the development of drug resistance pathways in different HIV-1 subtypes. Her current work is characterizing signature drug resistance to newer antiretroviral drugs, including islatravir, doravirine, rilpivirine, bictegravir, dolutegravir and cabotegravir.
As co-coordinator of the Quebec drug resistance testing program between 2002-2016, Bluma Brenner has created a database of sequence datasets and available epidemiological data using non-nominative identifiers from all genotyped persons in the province. Her landmark study in Journal of Immunology study, cited 850 times, advanced phylogenetics as a structural framework to characterize population-level transmission dynamics of HIV in Men having Sex with Men and heterosexual populations.
Bluma Brenner is internationally recognized for her collaborative work with the late Mark Wainberg in describing signature genetic pathways leading to antiretroviral drug resistance for different HIV subtypes. Her most prominent work has been in the field of molecular epidemiology using phylogenetics to model HIV transmission dynamics and inform prevention efforts.
