In addition to the external sources of funding available to them, graduate students and postdocs at the LDI have the opportunity to compete for internal salary support and travel awards.

 

Scholarships/Fellowships

The LDI offers graduate students and postdocs the opportunity to compete for internal sources of salary support in the form of scholarships/fellowships.

LDI Scholarships are open to highly qualified graduate students at the LDI who are registered full-time at McGill University in a research training program leading to a MSc or PhD degree. Eligible students must be in MSc year 1-2 or PhD year 1-4 as indicated on their McGill Transcripts (from Minerva), and successful applicants must be registered at McGill University for the duration of the award. The LDI scholarships range between $5000-$20000, and supervisors are expected to supplement funded applicants such that the student is receiving a minimum total amount per year as a stipend, as required by the University of McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences’ general policy for minimum funding. Internal Scholarships are tenable for one year but, In some cases, students could be eligible for a second year.

The competition is held yearly, usually in February or March. As the LDI is committed to the ideal that research excellence is greatly enhanced by ensuring equity of opportunity in research, every graduate that meets the merit criteria are funded each year. Winners are selected by the LDI Internal Scholarship Committee. Criteria used in the selection process are weighted differently for MSc and PhD students, and include academic record, awards and studentships, peer-reviewed publications, presentations (oral and poster), research project and training environment.

* The Dr. Mark Wainberg Memorial Graduate Fellowship is awarded to the top ranked application in the LDI Scholarships competition.

The LDI also offers scholarships with a focus on specific diseases made possible by funds donated by specific donors.

All of these awards have been instrumental in launching trainees towards successful national and international salary competitions.

Travel Awards

The LDI offers graduate students and postdocs the opportunity to compete for internal sources of travel support to national and international meetings in the form of travel awards.

These awards are conferred to enhance the graduate training of students enrolled in years two to seven of a PhD program or in years two or three of a MSc program by providing travel funds for the presentation of a scholarly contribution at an international scientific meeting. Only travel to international scientific conferences is considered (International conferences held within Canada are eligible). Each LDI Travel Award is in the amount of up to $1,000 CAD and is paid as a reimbursement of travel expenses, including conference registration fees and associated costs.

The competition is held twice per year, in April and in October respectively. The awards are attributed among all eligible applicants by merit and based on the benefits the students will gain from the conference. Preference may be given to students applying/accepted for an oral presentation and students who have not previously received an LDI Travel Award.
