Surgery Core

GENERAL SURGERY

Currently supported surgeries in both mice and rats include ovariectomy, castration, vasectomy, splenectomy, nephrectomy,
5/6 nephrectomy, jugular catheterization, mini-pump implantation and removal, tumor implantation and removal, and
matrigel implantation and removal.
Currently supported surgeries in mice include renal ischemia reperfusion. Other surgery procedures can be developed upon request.

SURGICAL MODELS OF PATHOLOGY GENERATION

The Surgery Core of the LDI-ARC can create a surgical model of pathology on your animals. Currently supported surgery models
in both mice and rats are for 5/6 nephrectomy. Currently supported surgery models in mice include renal ischemia model, myocardial
infarction and microvessel anastomose of large vessels for volume overload.
Other surgery procedures can be developed upon request to generate additional models.

STEREOTAXIC SURGERY

The Surgery Core of the LDI-ARC can inject substances into the animal’s brain using a stereotoxic device.

NECROPSY AND MORPHOMETRY

The Surgery and phenotyping cores can perform a complete phenotype investigation that includes full body necropsy with macroscopic
observations, body weight, body or bone lengths, tissue weights, as well as publication quality pictures of the animal and/or selected tissues.
The images collected can be analyzed with the Infinity Analysis software to measure the length or surface and to annotate images by the
Surgery Core or the users.

TISSUE COLLECTION AND PREPARATION

The surgery and phenotyping cores can collect required tissues and place the tissue in ice, freeze in dry ice, or OTC, or fix in formaldehyde
or glutaraldehyde. The procedure includes standard morphometric analyses with brief comments.
Animals can be perfused with formaldehyde or glutaraldehyde (perfusion to take place in researcher's chemical hood).

BLOOD AND TISSUE COLLECTION

The LDI-ARC staff can collect blood upon request.

BLOOD ANALYSIS (VET ABC)

The Surgery Core manages a blood analyzing machine which allows you to perform a complete blood count and differential on whole blood.

METABOLIC ASSESSMENT

The LDI Surgery Core staff can measure glucose, and tolerance testing can be performed using a glucometer.

ARCHIVAL OF GENE MODIFIED MICE

The LDI-ARC Surgery Core can collect sperm from mice and preserve them in liquid nitrogen to archive the line. This prevents genetic
drift, as an insurance against loss of breeding and provides the opportunity to manage your mouse colonies by archiving (as frozen sperm)
those mice that are not under investigation without the costs associated with maintaining a breeding population
