Dr. Michael Hier is a head and neck surgeon at the Jewish General Hospital, and the site director for the McGill University training program in Otolaryngology. Dr. Hier graduated from medicine at McGill University in 1990 and performed residency training from 1990 to 1995 at McGill University. In 1997, Dr. Hier completed a fellowship training program in Head and Neck Surgery-Oncology at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. His clinical specialty is head and neck oncology, head and neck endocrine surgery, and laser laryngeal surgery.

Dr. Hier is an academic head and neck surgeon with a very strong interest in medical student and resident education, as well as being an active participant in multiple facets of clinical research. He was involved in pioneering work on salivary gland transfer surgery to prevent xerostomia in association with radiation to the head and neck. Dr. Hier performs endoscopic laser laryngeal surgery at the Jewish General Hospital, a McGill University teaching hospital. He completed a term as Head and Neck Oncology Co-Chair for the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and has recently completed a term as a member of the education committee of the American Head and Neck Society. He remains actively involved at the national level.

Major Research Activities
 
Dr. Hier has research interests in the area of: calcium, PTH metabolism status post head and neck endocrine surgery, proteomics of head and neck cancer, and laser endoscopic surgery for laryngeal cancer.

Dr. Michael P. Hier is a nationally recognized academic head and neck surgeon. He is involved in clinical teaching, research and administration. He collaborates in both national and international research and clinical trials.

He has received local teaching awards as well as research awards at national and international meetings.

He co-directs the Annual McGill Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Update course.
