Nicoletta Eliopoulos’ laboratory is particularly interested in adult stem and progenitor cells for pre-clinical and clinical cell therapy and/or gene therapy studies for various diseases. We are currently exploring the use of gene-enhanced mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) for the treatment of renal and breast cancers, as well as potential agents as pre-treatments for the MSCs for improving their beneficial effects.
Our research program includes the pre-treatment, gene-enhancement, and therapeutic use of adult stem/progenitor cells.
Our primary basic research is on mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) derived from different tissues, such as adipose tissue and bone marrow, for cell and gene therapy of various diseases. Currently funded projects include the development of novel gene-enhanced MSCs and their evaluation in renal and breast cancer models. Also, we are investigating new pre-treatment strategies for ameliorating MSCs’ effectiveness in tissue injury models.
In addition, we are involved in cell therapy clinical studies through our activities in the Jewish General Hospital Cell Processing Center (JGH CPC), a clinical-grade cell handling facility in the LDI committed to fostering early-phase trials testing cell-based technologies.
