Hussein Samhat receives the Maple and the Cedar Award from the FCCICL

Hussein Samhat, a master’s student in Oliver Lasry’s laboratory received the Maple and the Cedar Award (master’s Level – $3,000) from the Fondation de la Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie Canada-Liban (FCCICL) at the Lebanese consulate in Montreal on September 20, 2023. The scholarship is open to all Canadian-Lebanese university students registered at a Quebec University who have successfully completed at least the first year of their University program. A combination of academic excellence and financial need are the primary criteria for the award.

Chantel Mukonoweshuro obtains Canadian Cancer Society inaugural 2023 master's Research Training Award

Chantel Mukonoweshuro, an MSc student supervised by Dr. April Rose, LDI Principal Investigator and Medical Oncologist at the Segal Cancer Centre of the JGH, obtained a grant of $65,000 over 2 years as part of the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) Inaugural 2023 Master’s and PhD Research Training Awards Competition, for her project entitled Exploring the mutational landscape of RAS in cancers with Class 2/3 BRAF mutations. This award supports the next generation of researchers across Canada at the Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral levels in conducting cancer related research while fostering long term connections with Canada’s cancer research ecosystem through a combination of exposures to other disciplines, knowledge translation, engagement, and mentorship opportunities. LDI Scholarships are open to highly qualified graduate students at the LDI who are registered full-time at McGill University in a research training program leading to a MSc or PhD degree. They are made possible thanks to the support of the following generous donors: TD Bank, the Dubrovsky Family, Douglas W. Gold, Dr. Arthur Rosenberg, Galina Dorfman and the McGill Centre for Translation Research in Canada (MCTRC).

The LDI is committed to the ideal that research excellence is greatly enhanced by ensuring equity of opportunity in research and every graduate that met the merit criteria were funded this year. Winners were selected by the LDI Internal Scholarship Committee comprising Chantal Autexier, Colin Crist, Annett Korner, Kostas Pantopoulos, April Rose, and Michael Witcher, Associate Director for Faculty Development at the LDI. Criteria used in the selection process were weighted differently for MSc and PhD students, and included: Academic Record, Awards and Studentships, Peer-Reviewed Publications, Presentations (Oral and Poster), Research Project and Training Environment.
